Abstract
Biofeedback training is useful method to reduce the psychological and physiologic tension with induce psychophysiologic symptoms. Recently, we applied biofeedback therapy on the treatment of patients with psychogenic impotence in order to
investigate
effectiveness of this therapy for those patients. Two steps of biofeedback training using Biolab021 and Polygraph system was provided for patients whose etiology of impotence proved to be pure psychogenic following full differential diagnosis of
impotence. As a first step, the training was focused on the excitatory self control of the patient's general biologic rhythm with heart rate, body temperature, electroencephalographic and electromyographic activity. The second step focused on
psychosexual training to induce and maintain penile erection and/or audiovisula stimulatin. Of 4 patients who participated in this biofeedback training program, two showed satisfactory results in a 2 to 6 months period after initiation of
treatment, by
both objective and subjective evaluation; one showed no differece in penile erection, compared to his previous status; the remaining patient is on the way of follow-ups.
These results suggest that biofeedback therapy may provide good results in the treatment of some patients with psychogenic impotence. However, further study is required to determine the longterm benefits of this form of therapy.
